#TuesdayRunes – Isa

Welcome to another segment of our journey through the Elder Futhark script runes!

Set of Wooden Runes made by Jan Sikes

Today’s Runic Symbol is Isa (ee-sah).

The word, Isa, translates to ice. The keywords associated with the rune are: obstacles, standstill, stagnation, delay and coldness.

This is the exact opposite of our Tarot Reading yesterday, but remember this is not a reading. It’s simply a study of each rune from start to finish.

Isa is the third rune in the Hagal’s Aett, and the third in a row to carry a predominantly negative meaning.

As a representation of frozen water, Isa signifies a lack of movement, which is likely frustrating. There may be physical circumstances blocking our progress, a loss of energy, or mental blocks that you cannot see past in order to move forward.

It can also indicate a delay, and it is best to accept this as a reality in your current situation, instead of pushing against it. Know that the sun will eventually return to melt the block of ice and allow water to flow freely again.

In the meantime, take advantage of this still, static energy to practice focusing on the present moment. Meditation is highly useful now as it can help dissipate frustration and take your focus off of things you can’t control.

The main thing to remember when this rune shows up is that you don’t give up on your ambition or assume that a delay won’t work out. If there’s anything you can do to prepare for making progress once it becomes possible, put your energy there.

So, as always, there is a positive spin on what could be perceived as negative.

In the context of relationships, Isa can point to emotional coldness between people. Affection may be lacking and communication may have come to a standstill. I passionate romance may be cooling off.

One other aspect of this rune to note: The transparency of ice can also signify clarity. Evaluating your circumstances from a cool, emotionally detached viewpoint may prove helpful, which is another positive aspect of Isa.

The birthdays associated with Isa are November 28th – December 13th.

  1. Jan, a fascinating complex rune and I like it’s duality, the negative mixed with clarity, the pause giving time for reflection and positive steps forward. Thank you for sharing your excellent knowledge and making it accessible for us all! I’m hooked with this series and entering into a new world for me.

  2. Thank you, Jan, for sharing insight into what runes signify. I’m currently reading a Norse Historical Fantasy about a Valkarie, Brynhild, banished to the human world. She has the ability to conjure different alphabetic sounds in a magical song to influence nature. In one scene, she hears the “k-k” and “s-sh,” a tugging rune to help steer the hero, who is rowing in a boat away from her, back to the shore. It is fascinating how Brynhild uses runes in the story. It wasn’t until I read your novel, “Ghostly Interference,” that I became aware of the concept.

    1. Wow, Linnea! The Norse Historical Fantasy sounds like an amazing read. The Norse used Runes as a way of communicating and I love that authors are bringing that forward in stories. Thank you so much for your kind words about “Ghostly Interference!” Thank you for stopping by and glad you are enjoying the study of the runes! Have a great day!

  3. It reminds me of the Hanged Man in the Tarot when even with a slightly different touch. So, this rune is basically representing concealment? Can it also mean to withdraw from something to receive clarity?

    1. It could be comparable to The Hanged Man in Tarot, Erika. It is a time of delay but not necessarily concealment. The ice aspect of it indicates a new perspective or clarity about a situation. Very similar. Thank you for your comment! Hugs!

  4. Jan, it’s always fun and informative to read your posts. I agree that sometimes it creates a moment of great clarity to look for the positive in a negative situation or feeling. Doing so may uncover a way of thinking that had eluded us. Thanks for putting the positive spin on this rune for us!

    1. That was a profound statement to me too, Mae. And the first thing that came to my mind was how in a murder mystery, ice could play a huge role. 🙂 But I’ll pass that thought seed to you. Thank you so much for stopping by! Have a great day!

    1. Always our choice, Yvette. In any given situation, we choose how we react and how we process. While we can’t control things that happen to and around us, we can control our responses. Thank you so much for stopping by. Sending hugs your way!
