Remembrance Day – #MemorialDay

I am in Lubbock, Texas, helping my sister get settled into her new abode. My regular posts will resume next Monday. For that reason, comments are turned off.

But for now, we pause to remember those men and women who have died protecting our freedom.

Whatever you do on this holiday, never forget the sacrifice.

I am super excited to host C.S. Boyack on my blog today as he tells us a little more about his newest Lizzie and The Hat adventure, Lunar Boogie. You may have seen my review last week and if so, you know how much I enjoyed it!

One of the things I enjoy immensely in each of the Lizzie and The Hat books is the music. The songs Boyack chooses bring instant memories for me and it adds to the dimensional layers of the story. But, I’ll let him tell you more about it. Take it away, Mr. Boyack!

Thanks for having me over, Jan. I try to keep each tour post unique, and with your ties to music thought that might be a good topic here.

Lizzie and the Pythons are a cover band put together by Lizzie and the hat. The hat is a creature from another dimension who take the form of a hat. She wears him at all of her performances, because their symbiotic relationship allows him to play the upright bass using her hands and fingers.

Their band plays music people can party and dance to. It could be anything from rock and roll, blues, country, even a bit of glam rock on occasion.

I spend part of each evening surfing for music. When I first started, my memory was good enough for several hundred songs on a playlist I made. After that, I filtered them down into a specific playlist for this series. I wind up listening to that during my commutes and it inspires me.

These days, I discover a lot of obscure music that would work, but leaves me with an executive decision. Writing the books is a bit of a tightrope. Obscure songs are just as much fun, but might not relate to as many readers. Would any of you recognize the opening chords of “You Need Love,” by JD Simo? I doubt it, but you’re missing out. Hard to add that to a book and have it come across.

A title everyone recognizes will help set the mood for a scene at one of their gigs. It’s a party environment, fun, etc. It’s a nice contrast to killing monsters under the full moon. I have to be careful, though. Music is protected by Copyright. I can freely use titles, but not lyrics without purchasing a license. (Did that once, and it’s not worth it.) It gets a bit tricky, but I’ve been able to weave the titles into dialog and that seems to work.

The other trick came from selling the band. I did this in an earlier book, but won’t do it for every one as that would get boring. They have a five piece; bass, drums, guitar, piano, and saxophone. The saxophone player has a baritone and a tenor, and also plays harmonica.

You can see how some kick-ass music just won’t fit this band. Electric Light Orchestra or Styx were great, but the available instruments might not work. I did this by explaining that solos can be handled by other instruments, organs can be somewhat covered by a harmonica, background violins can be covered by soft saxophone, but it will sound a little different. A banjo might be covered by a guitar, etc. Otherwise, I’d have to give them a twenty-five piece band and most gigs wouldn’t pay enough to feed everyone. Many of them would be waiting around for the one song they’re needed on.

A smaller group allows for more intimacy as well. With an ongoing series, I need that. They feel more like a family, and I avoid character soup.

There is a lot more to these stories than playing with the band. The symbiotic relationship between Lizzie and the hat allows them to fight monsters. He has several special skills, but no appendages to do much with. She has free will along with the needed limbs. Together, they can accomplish great things. I’ll let the cover and blurb tell you about this specific book.

Here’s an example of what some of their music might sound like. Get ready to ROCK!

Blurb:

Lizzie and the hat are back in action, only this time they’re up against the most tragic monster of all, a werewolf.

This adventure is more like hunting an animal, and the werewolf is unlikely to come to any of their musical performances. This puts Lizzie out in the dark corners and wooded areas of the city. It may be more beneficial to get the monster to hunt Lizzie than to stalk him on his own turf. All she has to do is be quicker on the trigger than the wolf is on his feet.

At the same time, the police think they’re after a serial killer. Lizzie tries to keep them alive while also keeping them out of her way. As the body count rises, so do the pressures. It doesn’t help that people are blaming Lizzie and the hat for the killings. This involves an urban myth about them that the locals call Hellpox.

Pull on your boogie shoes and join the hunt. Designed as an afternoon read, this one is tons of supernatural fun.

Whiplash – Janet Dailey #Review #NetGalley

I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions expressed are strictly my own.

I picked this book up because I have enjoyed other books written by Janet Dailey.

But there is something different about this book. Janet Dailey passed away in 2013, so I am assuming Whiplash was written by a ghostwriter. I was not able to conjure up any empathy for the heroine, Val. She never seemed to able to move past her sordid past and terrible mistakes to embrace the present opportunities. That gave me no reason to root for her.

The book is set in the world of the National PBR (Professional Bullriding) Finals rodeo event in Las Vegas, Nevada. I loved the way the author set the scene and took me inside the rodeo arena to see the action close-up. When a man climbs on the back of a 1,800-pound bull and the chute is opened, anything can happen – and does.

Casey Bozeman is the hero in this story and I immediately fell in love with him. He is one of those people we all know, who will step up to help anyone in need. His job is to protect the cowboys that ride the bulls. And more times than one, he had to collide with the angry bull to save another man’s life.

Casey and Val fell in love when they were teenagers. But that was years ago. And after Val left with no explanation and dropped off the face of the earth, he was left with a broken heart and life. But he put himself back together and even tried marriage, which failed. He finally came to grips with the notion he could never love anyone the way he loved Val, but she was gone. That is until she turns up with her family at the PBR. But Val is in trouble. The kind of trouble that threatens lives. You don’t cross the mafia and live. And yet Casey is determined to help her and to get her back into his bed.

There were parts of this book that I loved. The older sister, Tess, the younger sister, Lexie, and her husband Shane were all great characters. They are united with one goal and that is to save their ranch and produce some stock bulls to ride into the big money in the rodeo arena. Each character has flaws, but they form a united front. Val is the outsider, even though she’s come back home after leaving a drug and alcohol rehab treatment. The troubles Val brings to their door, are monumental and can end it all. She repetitiously has thoughts of remorse, but her actions don’t back up those thoughts. She has deep dark secrets that she keeps hidden along with the scars on her body.

The author drops hints throughout the book as to what her secret is, but until it all comes out, the reader is left to wonder what it is that keeps this beautiful woman so conflicted. I commend the author for that.

While I loved the rodeo setting and enjoyed the plot, I would like to have seen Val be more genuine instead of trying to manipulate everyone, including the men who were determined to kill her. She is playing a deadly game with innocent lives.

The star of the story is a bull named Whiplash. Even though he’s been bred to be bucking stock for the rodeo, he’s young and easily traumatized. But it took his fury to bring down the antagonist.

The story comes to a conclusion with an overall happy ending.

With less repetitious thoughts and scenes, this would be a stronger story.

While I would like to give this book a higher rating, I can only offer up Three Stars.

#TuesdayRunes – Elhaz

Welcome back to another segment of the journey through the runes! We are more than halfway through the Elder Futhark Alphabet.

The rune we are exploring today is Elhaz (el-hahz) also known as Algiz.

The keywords associated with this rune are: Protection, Defense and Opportunity.

Sounds uncannily like our Tarot Reading yesterday. 🙂

Elhaz is the rune of defense and protection and its shape is said to represent both the elk, with its imposing antlers, and the sedge plant, whose sharp leaves act as a natural protection from would-be predators. Both images illustrate the power represented by this rune.

Drawing Elhaz in a reading indicates that you are safe from danger, and there is no need to fear. However, don’t take the protective energy for granted by being reckless with your actions. As long as you remain alert and clear-minded, in touch with your intuition, you are headed for a positive outcome.

Elhaz has also been associated with reaching up to connect with the divine for support. It can refer to an upcoming opportunity or quest. Usually this involves one or more other people who may bring an offer or an invitation to join in a venture of some kind. As long as your intuition agrees, go for it. This is a favorable time for a new endeavor, and it is likely to produce positive results at a rapid pace.

Elhaz indicates protection from negative energy and people, protection of property, strengthened friendships, and possible astral communication.

The birthdates associated with this rune are January 28th – February 13th.

Monday #Motivation #Meditation #TarotReading

Welcome to the start of another week filled with powerful opportunities!

Created in Canva

The Chakra we are focusing on this week is the Solar Plexus. It is located in the upper area between the navel and diaphragm. It acts as our center of personal power. This chakra governs personality, ego, and identity, as well as personal freedom, choice, and authenticity. The solar plexus chakra also has much to do with motivation, willpower, and purpose, which stem from one’s sense of personal efficacy. Self-confidence and view of the self connect to the solar plexus chakra, as well. Furthermore, this chakra governs the digestive system and its respective organs; as a result, it has jurisdiction over both the gut’s emotional brain and stored emotions. You can wear the color yellow, carry or wear a yellow citrine gemstone, or get out in the sunshine to help bring awareness to this chakra. I found this short guided meditation to share with you.

Now for our weekly Tarot Reading.

It feels like we are in such a powerful time right now. Once again, I randomly drew cards from the Major Arcana, which affects the deepest aspects of our life lessons and karma. The first words that come to mind with The World card are, “All the world’s a stage.” This card represents unlimited opportunities. It is the final card in the Major Arcana and can also symbolize accomplishments and success. But for this reading, I just see it as a world full of opportunities for us to choose from. The Death card always symbolizes the end of something. Perhaps it’s walking away from what no longer serves you, or the death of old ideas and beliefs. It indicates transformation or transition. The ending of something old so that something new can begin. And in this layout, that is perfectly represented by The Fool. It indicates new beginnings, taking the proverbial leap of faith with innocence and bliss. The sun is shining on him as he nears the edge of the cliff and he’s carefree and trusting. So, to me, the overall take on this reading is this: The World is filled with opportunities waiting for us if we can only let go of what holds us back and no longer serves us. Then we take the leap of faith, trusting that our new beginning is going to bring us one step closer to what our heart truly desires in life. This is truly a powerful time of transformation. I can feel it.

If you’ve forgotten how I draw cards, you can refer back to this short video, but they are always random and always inspired. https://youtu.be/wvNEkIrVUgI

Make it a great week and I’d love to hear your comments on the Solar Plexus Chakra, the meditation and the reading!

May #BookReviews Part 1 – @LBroday @lisawellsauthor @1rburkey @CalebPirtle @CW_Hawes @jamesrcallan @virgilante

I have had SUCH a great month of eclectic reading! I’m happy to share my thoughts on these books but it is going to take two posts to share them all. Please keep in mind I only share four and five star review reads.

Deacon Brannock is determined to make a name for himself and the saloon he’s worked his whole life to afford. He was prepared for life in the Wild West, but he hadn’t counted on Grace Legend…

Grace has always fought hard for what she believes in, and after her best friend is killed at the hands of her drunk and angry husband, that includes keeping alcohol out of her town. When the owner of the new saloon turns out to be a kind and considerate man, she can’t help but wonder if they could have a future together…if they weren’t on opposite sides of every issue.

MY REVIEW:

I first met Grace Legend in book 2 of the Men of Legend Series. She was a baby, but a precocious one and soon had the calloused cowboys on the huge Lone Star Ranch wrapped around her little finger. In this book, she is all grown up and forging a life for herself. She’s ambitious and sassy. She joins a Women’s Temperance Movement and marches with other women into the notorious Hell’s Half Acre in Fort Worth, known for the danger that lurks there. However, she isn’t prepared for the handsome and kind owner she finds at the Three Deuces saloon. And when they smash his whiskey barrels, destroying his livelihood, things heat up. Deacon Brannock has gone through hell and back to establish his business and just when things are running smoothly, here come these women determined to destroy him. One of my favorite scenes in the book is when Grace Legend’s father, the great Houston Legend, forces her to go to the saloon and clean up the mess she helped the women make. Then Houston replenishes Deacon’s whiskey supply. The tension been Grace and Deacon is so thick you can’t cut it with a sharp knife. It is highly unlikely that the two could ever be civil to each other, much less fall in love. This story is filled with such powerful imagery. Broday has depicted life in the rough and rowdy town of Fort Worth, Texas in the late 1880s perfectly. She uses all of the senses to bring the scenes to life. The characters are well-developed and layered, each with their own bag of secrets. If you love western romance, you are going to love this new book! I highly recommend it.

Librarian Kinley Foster wants to write erotic romance—the steamy, sexy, curl-your-toes kind of stuff. The problem? She desperately needs a little erotic inspiration. And at a romance convention in Vegas, she finds it…or rather him.

Literary agent Ian Thompson is a professional. Mentoring an aspiring author is one thing, giving her a thoroughly satisfying sexy education is quite another. Especially when she’s as stunning and deliciously curvaceous as Kinley. Yet Ian can’t help himself when Kinley makes him a wager he can’t resist. A wager that will tempt Ian to cross every professional—and every sensual—boundary in the book…

MY REVIEW:

Steamy with a Capital S!!! This was such a fun book to read and I immediately fell in love with both characters. Kinley Foster has an older brother, so grew up around all of his friends. She’s had a major crush on his friend, Ian Thompson, since she can remember. But he rejected her and she’s never forgotten. Now she’s an aspiring author, writing steamy romance and heading to Las Vegas for a conference where she hopes to land a literary agent. To her surprise, the man she hasn’t seen in ten years who picks her up at the airport is none other than Ian Thompson. He’s every bit as handsome as she remembers. One debacle leads to another and she has to share a hotel suite with him. What a surprise to find that Ian Thompson is actually the acclaimed literary agent, I. Hartley. Kinley is in over her head after an indecent proposal from Thompson where he promises to teach her what she needs to know to write steamy romance. This is an off-the-charts steamy romance with a little light BDSM and a lot of hot sex with a series of missteps and mishaps. I won’t leave a spoiler, but I will say I enjoyed this light read. It’s a great way to escape from reality!

One photograph – A single image – A lonely boat on the edge of the sea.
Is it adrift? – Was it abandoned? – Did it wash ashore? – Was anyone aboard?
Did someone leave it behind? – Is anyone coming back? – Who knows.
The sea has washed the footprints away.
Look at the vessel and think: “If that old boat could talk, what stories it would tell.”
Wonder no longer. Twelve members of Underground Authors all gazed upon the same image.
And to each, the photograph told a different story. Same boat. Same image. Different genres. From mystery and technothriller to romance and magical realism, from horror and historical fiction to fantasy and suspense with a little paranormal thrown in for good measure. These stories are presented in Beyond The Sea and are the handiwork of award-winning authors. The stories are all different as the boat had more than one secret to tell. It had a dozen.

MY REVIEW:

This is a compilation of short stories from twelve different authors. Each story is unique and the twelve together cover a diverse compilation of genres. There is everything from mystery to apocalyptic to historical and suspense. While I enjoyed them all, there were a few that really stood out to me, as a reader. C.W. Hawes wrote a compelling short story that I didn’t want to come to an end. His words came alive and I joined in with the characters in a hair-raising survival journey in a post-apocalyptic world. Great world-building and great writing! The Breakfield and Burkey writing duo wrote an inspiring tale about taking that proverbial leap of faith not knowing if it will end all the hopes, dreams, and goals of two ambitious young ladies. James R. Callan offers a nail-biting tale about an unexpected kidnapping and daring escape. Linda Pirtle took me on a mystery-solving journey while Kelly Marshall left me with goosebumps from her chilling tale of revenge. The theme of all of these stories is the boat you see on the cover. That is the common thread. It’s so amazing to me how any group of people can view one photo and all see a different story in it. Again, while I enjoyed each story, these are just a few that stood out to me. If you are looking for entertaining diversity, this compilation of short stories is perfect as there is something for everyone! I highly recommend this book to all readers of all genres! And as a result of this book, I will be exploring other work by these authors.

MY REVIEW:

This story, which is book 4 in The Hat series, is multi-layered. Lizzie St. Laurent and her magical sidekick, The Hat (a creature from another dimension) find themselves entrenched in a futile search for a killer. Not only a killer, but one who devours its victims, leaving behind only a few small body pieces and rivers of blood. This quickly earns him the nickname of “Sausage Maker” from the media. While Lizzie and The Hat normally hunt down vampires and ghouls, this one is different and The Hat tries to talk Lizzie out of pursuing it. The other plot unfolding in the story is police sergeant, Joe Yoder, who is grieving the death of his wife. He keeps a pomander drenched in her perfume (Emeraude) and smells it when he needs to feel her near or wants to communicate with her, which he does quite often. When he’s assigned to the murder cases, he’s at a loss. This doesn’t seem like anything human. Yet, what else could it be? Everyone knows werewolves and vampires don’t really exist, even if all of the killings do occur on the full moon. One of the things I’ve loved in each of The Hat books is the banter back and forth between Lizzie and The Hat. It adds a nice helping of humor to an otherwise dark story. The Hat loves surfing the internet and spending money. The Hat is also the manager for the band, Lizzie and the Pythons, where he plays the stand-up bass through Lizzie’s fingers. In this book, we get a closer look at some of the other band members. Lizzie fears one of them could be the murderer. The way this book concludes, we get to see a softer more vulnerable side of Lizzie that’s not been shown before. This is an entertaining read with fabulous world-building and engaging characters. I highly recommend this and the other books in The Hat series. Also, it’s worth noting that you do not have to read the previous books before this one. It works well as a standalone

#TuesdayRunes – Perthro

Welcome to another segment of our study of the Elder Futhark Runes!

Today’s rune is Perthro (pair-throh).

Of all the runes, Perthro is the most mysterious. Its meaning has never been agreed upon by scholars but the symbol is often interpreted as a receptacle used for casting lots, such as a modern-day dice cup. It is most commonly used as a means of discovering hidden knowledge.

Perthro can indicate that things are not quite as they seem, and that something previously unknown is about to be revealed. This could be a secret someone has been keeping, or it could be a spiritual truth that has been hidden from you until now. If this rune appears in a reading, you are advised to pay attention to the signs and signals that your intuition is picking up on.

If you’ve been wrestling with a stubborn conundrum, Perthro can be signaling a need to go within to find the answers you seek. Clearing your mind allows the enlightenment you need to arise naturally, without effort. This rune encourages you to trust in the mysteries of the unknown, and rest assured all will be revealed in due time.

Perthro can also be interpreted as “chance,” in the sense of a surprise or unexpected development. Depending on the other runes around it in a reading, it can also indicate a pregnancy and/or birth, as the receptive shape of the symbol has been associated with the womb.

It can offer good luck in gambling, protect business investments, health and healing as well as foster spiritual clarity.

In a reading, this rune can either be upright or reversed. If it is reversed, it can point to a secret you are holding onto, which is becoming harder to keep, or an unhealthy focus on something from the past. It also could indicate a disappointment in which case you would be well-advised to avoid taking risks at this time.

The birthdates associated with this rune are January 13 – January 28.

Monday #Motivation #Meditation #TarotReading

Welcome to the start of a new week!

Rumi Quote Created by Jan Sikes in Canva

As I talked about last week, I am going to choose meditations that help to activate our seven Chakras. Last week we focused on the Root Chakra. This week it’s the Sacral Chakra. It is located in the area between the belly button and the pelvic bone, and is the chakra related to our emotions, sexuality and creativity. Some simple ways to help strengthen this chakra is to wear the color orange, carry a Carnelian stone and say any of these simple affirmations: “I allow my creativity to flow through me. I embrace vibrant sexuality. My emotions are free flowing and balanced.” And now for our short meditation to help clear and activate this chakra.

When I drew the cards for our Tarot Reading this week, I literally gasped. I swear you cannot make this stuff up. I got chills from head to toe. A big thing to note from these cards is how powerful they are. Each of these cards is from the Major Arcana, which deals with our big life and karmic lessons.

See what I mean? When I drew The Lovers card after doing the Sacral Chakra Meditation, I was blown away. Folks, I believe in the power of the Universe and when things like this happen, it only serves to reinforce that belief. In its purest form, the Lovers card represents conscious connections and meaningful relationships. It is a card of open communication and raw honesty, but can also represent getting clear about your values and beliefs. At its heart, the Lovers is about choice. The choice about who you want to be in this lifetime, how you connect with others and on what level, and about what you will and won’t stand for. To make good choices, you need to be clear about your personal beliefs and values – and stay true to them. The Hermit card follows with the encouragement to take a break from everyday life, draw your energy and attention inward, and find the answers you seek, deep within your soul. The Hermit often appears when you are at a pivotal point in your life and considering a new direction. Through meditation, contemplation, and self-examination, you may begin to re-evaluate your personal goals and change your overall course. You will look at your life with a deeper, more spiritual understanding and a few of your priorities will change as a result. The Hermit also represents the desire to turn away from a consumerist or materialistic society to focus on your inner world. The Temperance card is all about balance – give and take, yin and yang, up and down. It encourages patience and moderation. This card calls on you to remain calm, even when life feels stressful or frantic. Maintain an even temperament and manage your emotions (again a direct connection with the Sacral Chakra). Be the peacekeeper. This Tarot card is about blending, mixing, and combining diverse elements in a way that creates something new and even more valuable than its separate parts.

So, an overall look at these cards gives us the inspiration to be open and honest in our communications (especially with ourselves), look inward and be introspective, and do all of this with balance, patience and inner calm.

Whew!

Make it a great week folks. We have a powerful opportunity!
