When Tori Winters becomes the star witness in a murder trial, someone tries to kill her. Terrified, she’s not giving the killer a second chance. With all her worldly possessions packed in her car, Tori is on the run. A mysterious phone call about an inheritance leads her to Granbury. After all, who would look for her in a small, quaint Texas town?

Instead, Tori’s life is about to spin into an existence where nothing is as it seems. The historic house she inherits is steeped in secrets from the past. Secrets that may prove deadly. A stranger in a strange town, who can she trust? There is the disinherited step-grandson and the lawyer and his son. What are they hiding?

Tori’s inheritance may not be a blessing when a killer strikes again. It could be her death warrant.

The Book’s Delight

The setting for this book intrigued me as I have visited the small Texas town of Granbury multiple times. Then the book blurb sucked me right in. And I was not disappointed.

The author takes the reader straight into the action from the first page when hospice nurse, Tori Winters, is faced with the suspicious death of an elderly patient. Right away, I saw her strength and determination as she held her ground. She didn’t back down from the adversary, even after he sicced his pit bull on her. I loved her tenacity.

The author did a fabulous job of unfolding this story from the first inciting incident to the last page. An unexpected phone call that ultimately sent Tori to the small Texas town surprised me. Can you imagine learning you’ve inherited a massive estate from a grandmother you never knew you had? Neither could Tori.

Then, take that a step farther, and not only is it Tori’s estranged grandmother’s estate, but one built by a notorious mobster (Tori’s great grandfather) in the 1930s. The house holds secrets piled on top of secrets, and Tori must unravel the sparse clues to find them, all while fighting to stay alive.

Situations and people are not always as they first seem. Everyone is hiding something. The tension and conflict in this murder mystery escalate with each chapter, lining up a long list of suspects. And to be completely honest, I did not figure out who the antagonist was until the very last part of the story when he came forward with a vengeance.

This is a book with a mixture of fun and discovery for Tori, as well as life-threatening situations. I loved the story, devoured it, and gave it Four Stars! If you enjoy a good mystery with lots of layers and surprises that keep you guessing, you will enjoy this book by Anita Dickason!

  1. I’m sorry to be late in responding to these wonderful comments. I had a family emergency. Now, I’m playing catch-up. Jan, thank you for your awesome review and for hosting my book. From a fellow author, reviews such as this are so rewarding. And, to everyone else, thank you for taking the time to stop by Jan’s site and leave a comment. This is what makes it all worthwhile. This book was a hoot to write. I’ve already started on the next one in the series. Again, thank you.

    1. I’m sorry to hear you had a family emergency but I am happy you stopped by, Anita. I loved Tori’s character in the book. She was tough, strong, and determined! My kind of gal! How wonderful to hear you are working on the next book in the series already! I’ll be waiting. 🙂 Best wishes for tons of sales on this tour!

  2. The book sounds wonderful, Jan, and I thoroughly enjoyed the trailer. I like books where I can’t figure out whodunnit until the end. Thanks for the review and recommendation, and congrats to Anita on the new release. 🙂

  3. I loved this 1st book in Anita’s new series. Without giving away too much, this mystery is as much about the past as it is the present. Tori’s newfound family includes a deceased Dallas gangster who ran the city’s premiere speakeasy back in the 1930s. If I had to choose between Anita’s thrillers and her new mystery, it would be hard to do.
